C-C-Changes, or Radio Clash Live is dead, Long live Classic Bootleg Radio!

It’s been over two years since I started Radio Clash Live – the first incarnation of RCL came online via AirTime on 5th March 2013 – and it’s be a mad ride. Given the fact that I stopped the Radio Clash podcast last year, and other people ended their mix projects (notable exception: Ian Fondue with Lloydbrary, still going strong!) it seemed right to kill Radio Clash Live! Sad but the group effort didn’t really catch on, and if I’d known I’d be the only ‘live’ person on RCL, I’d never have called it Radio Clash Live! Seeing the Live part made me cringe for the last part of a year…

But from the ashes comes a new thing, phoenix like…I present to you – Classic Bootleg Radio! Same stream, same links, but part of the Bootleg Archive iniative.

From now on, all the tunes you hear on CBR are 100% classic bootlegs, mashups, bastard pop, mixes and NO talk – all pre-2007, so a lot of exclusives, forgotten dusty party starters, but all classics! No schedules, no boring blather from me, just 24/7 tunes.

I need to either rebuild or rebrand this site, or pull it – I dunno…but if you want to know more about the Bootleg Archive currently go to the Facebook page…especially if you have pre-2007 mashups to upload/share.

Have a Wicker Man Friday! (and Saturday)

Wicker Man is 40! (well in December it is) and they’ve found a copy of the 99 minute cut, and this Friday 27th is showing in cinemas across the country (and I suspect the world). I’m seeing it at The Curzon with Memory Tapes performing the soundtrack.

So to celebrate this, Radio Clash Live on Friday from 10am til Saturday will be broadcasting the Wicker Man podcasts, associated Scottish shows, various versions of the Wicker Man soundtrack by Paul Giovanni, WM covers and related original and modern acid/freak folk music, hauntology and spooktronica and the like (think Trader Horne, scottish folk, early John Martyn, Boards of Canada, Vashti Bunyan, Broadcast, Advisory Circle & Ghostbox, neofolk & Current 93, Psychic TV, Fleet Foxes, Low Anthem, Jane Weaver, Eccentronica Research Council, etc). Ian Fondue has been helping me with the selections, and I’ve been delving into the original massive pile of tracks for the two ‘Summerisle’ podcasts I did a few years back.

Haven’t totally worked out the schedules, but it will be pretty much the music and podcasts weaved in and out of some of normal schedule over 24 hours or so:

Friday (all times in British Summer Time):

    • 10:00-14:00: Music of Wicker Man
    • 14:00-18:00: Wicker Man & Scottish Podcasts
    • 18:00-20:30: Mix @ 6 as usual
    • 20:30-22:00: – Lloydbrary as usual, with occasional Wicker Man music
    • 22:00-24:00 – Wicker Man & Scottish Podcasts

    • 00:00-01:00: Notre Jam with Joel Crookes, with occasional Wicker Man music
    • 01:00-03:00: 50 Pound Note with Jeb Edwards, with occasional Wicker Man music
    • 03:00-06:00: Wicker Man & Scottish Podcasts
    • 06:00-10:00: Mix @ 6 as usual
    • 10:00-14:00: Music of Wicker Man
    • 14:00-18:00: Wicker Man & Scottish Podcasts

Might continue it further but I think over a day of freak folk & scary tunes is enough for everyone! Will also be a test of the new ‘override’ facility, which can override individual shows and slots with a new playlist *fingers crossed*

The Fox & Stonehenge – Ylvis

Norway’s answer to The Lonely Island or The Conchords Ylvis are viral darlings at the moment, and I love their tracks, very funny…so you’ll hear ‘The Fox’, ‘Stonehenge’ and ‘Someone Like You (Dubstep)’ on rotation on Radio Clash Live 😉 But watch the videos first, they are really funny pisstakes of EDM like LMFAO, dubstep and inane ballads. And you might learn something!

Radio Clash Live YouTube Channel Needs YOU!

Planning to experiment again with video & live streaming, and to that affect have setup a fresh YouTube channel for Radio Clash Live. Problem is, I need 100 subscribers apparently before live streaming is enabled on the account. So please if you want to help out (I never ask anything usually!) please go to the channel and click subscribe. Planning some cool stuff with Liquidsoap, as apparently it can stream out to GStreamer so should be possible to output to YouTube, Ustream and the like, with live webcam stuff as well as a constant stream with logos etc.

It’s what I originally planned for Radio Clash Live but my machines here couldn’t cope…we’ll see if this one can, I think it can 😀 So subscribe if you want to see that! Need 90 more…

    Radio Clash Live on random

Radio Clash Live is on fully random for the time being because of a software bug which I’m waiting on Sourcefabric to fix, if ever. Seems a lot happier, though – isn’t disconnecting every 5-10-15 minutes now which is a start! Tempted to move away from Airtime, although it would be a lot of coding, because it’s been nothing but bug city since 2.4…

Bastard – Old Skool classic mashups, bootlegs and bastard pop

Bastard Pop poster (Poster seen in Brighton – so Bastard Pop is making a comeback?)

In honour of Grant Essexboy I scheduled a show of classic mashups, bootlegs, bastard pop, mixes etc – all before 2005. It was such a success I’ve decided to make it a regular slot, so Sundays 9pm-00:30 BST you can go back in time, way back, to a time before key matching software and Ableton! Some real gems I’ve uploaded, and will continue to add them.

RIP Essexboy & Bastard! show tonight 9pm

In honour of Grant Essexboy (RIP), podcaster and bootlegger extraordinaire, there’s a show tonight on Radio Clash at 9pm-00:30 BST called Bastard! Many bootleg memories, some of his bootlegs too, no talk just many bastard pop gems and a classic Superchunk from soundHog. Complete retro nostalgia of the early mashup scene (pre 2005) but given the situation (Grant was one of the bootleggers and DJs part of GYBO and regular at the Bastard club) it seems appropriate, amd maybe some of you will learn some mashup history! 😉

    It’s A Fine Day…

People Fall From Windows, But Just for A Small While….la la la la.

Obtuse reason for that singalong is that Radio Clash Live has been upgraded to Airtime 2.4 which supports the new Opus codec…so I’ve changed the low quality stream to that format for a trial. Give it a spinamazing quality for only 64kbs stereo. Opus is also open source, works well with speech and music and internet telephony, and to my mind is the future (and also now a standard). With MP3 getting a little long in the tooth and not great for low quality, OGG never really taking off because it wasn’t different enough, AAC becoming the high-end radio of choice being the next DAB after frankly neolithic current MPEG2 but not that great at lower rates, and needing licenses, I can see Opus really cleaning up in the low-mid quality streaming sphere.

That link will work in Firefox (15 and above) and also VLC including Android beta, and apparently supported in Rockbox, HD Player IOS, GStreamer, ffmpeg, Winamp with a third party DLL, and sounds like Chrome and Opera soon to be next as they have partial support at the moment. Can’t see how Apple can claim to try and take over internet radio with iRadio without Opus support, unless it’s actually just another Pandora/Spotify clone…

    Beastles is Back!

DROOOOOOOOOOOP! That’s the sound of the Beastles arriving, well probably with that THX style chord from The End mixed in…dj BC has released ‘Ill Submarine’ and mighty fine it is too. Downloady here, and also on Soundcloud (and also proud for Radio Clash to help mirror it – I like thumbing my nose at those Blue Meanies EMI because they C&D’d me back in the day…nyah nyah *raspberry*!)

    These are my favourites:

OK a good sign of a mashup if it makes me smile. ‘Do You Want To Know A Secret?’ (which was already a silly song, sorry Beatles fans, it is – dunno why Lennon had a go at Macca’s ‘Granny Music’ when he penned that), pervy ST:NG and Red Dwarf samples and Intergalactic? *g*

Good intro to the album, ‘Here Comes The Sun’ always a ready made intro, with ‘No Sleep…’ certainly as I was scheduling the early morn on Radio Clash Live this was the most appropriate intro at 6am on Beastles Day. I’m guessing people might make it their alarm clock music….

Flying is strangely one of my favourite Beatles tracks, and it was written by Ringo! Early Moog-age too. Love this Macca sampling track, which chilled and eclectic wouldn’t be out of place on Paul’s Boutique…

Great tribute to MCA that ends the album, Don’t Let Me Down with some very laid back rapping…elsewhere on the album MCA says ‘I’m back from the dead!’ which even as a non-Beasties fan (it’s why I could ‘t tell you all of the Beasties tracks here), well it pulled me up sharp.

Sunday 9th is Beastles Day! Exclusive mixes from djBC & Ian Fondue
